When a vehicle begins to malfunction, those who subsequently become stranded on the side of the road may find that a significant portion of their safety rests in the hands of nearby drivers. Should another driver veer off course in the direction of a stranded vehicle, those nearby the vehicle may stand little chance of escaping to safety. A 49-year-old man died following a recent car accident involving similar circumstances in Maryland.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on a recent Thursday evening as the man was standing at the rear of his vehicle on the shoulder of a local interstate. Initial investigations indicate that a nearby driver exhibiting erratic behavior suddenly veered off the road and hit the man and his vehicle. The first car then proceeded to veer across the lanes of traffic and collide with a third vehicle.

Reports indicate that the man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver who caused the collision was taken to a medical facility for treatment of unknown injuries, while the driver of the third vehicle was not harmed. Although an investigation into the crash is ongoing, no further information was provided as to what might have caused the driver of the first car to begin exhibiting erratic behavior.
